Belt tightening?
Flipping newspapers nowadays seem to be a torture. Credit crisis, banks collapsing, recession, retrenchments, ordinary folks losing their hard-earned money overnight... the bad news just keep coming. It's hard not to sense the gloom & doom atmosphere around. I had neva expected things to turn out so badly until colleagues started talking abt an impending retrenchment exercise in my company. Who will the axe fall on? Will he be the guy sitting next to you or could it be you yourself? Will we still have a job comes year end? Rumours & gossips started flying around & ppl were really de-moralized & frightened by the prospect of lossing their rice bowls. It hits on me suddenly that you can just lose your job unexpectedly. Yeah, although I dun have a family with kids to feed, but losing one's job must really be a heart-wrenching & scary prospect, especially when you did nothing wrong except that you have became just a cost-cutting tool of your company. Although the company did not retrench anybody eventually(a company wide pay cut was done instead), I still feel wary as there are no certainty that the economy will not fall further & more drastic measures have to be done.
With a pay cut, I guess it's time to eat less at fancy restaurants & spend less on unneccessary items. Well, quality of life may drop a little but I guess it's still ok. I've been through the previous downturn in 2001 where jobs are hard to come by & pay was low. I survived with half my present pay the last time with less savings & probably this time round, I'm in a better position to survive the recession. But with my new home completing & marraige next yr, things may be a bit tight & tough going. Really hope that things will turn out better next yr. Otherwise, it will really be tough on everyone..
Anyway, despite all the gloomy news, here's something to wet your appetite & cheer your day:
